Fluffy psychedelic pop-prog sounds from Oklahoma. The Flaming Lips haven’t always made music for the masses. Remember 1997’s Zaireeka, which consisted of 4 CDs, where each CD had to be played on 4 different players at the same time? Compared to this, American Head is easy consumable and appealed to many new fans – my album of the year!

Once I saw the river clean
Hardcore fans of the Smiths weren’t always too much excited about Morrissey’s solo albums. He is a special kind of guy, whose point of view one can’t always share. Nevertheless, I love his absurd, bitter- sweet and socially critical lyrics, always delivered in a sweet voice. The 2020 album convinced with catchy melodies that have earworm potential.

When one door opens
Joe Bonamassa is a constant on the US blues rock scene. In his latest album he pays tribute to his idols. These are not the US American blues greats but British bands like The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. Consequently, he recorded the album at Abbey Road Studios in London.

Bob Dylan began his career as a folk singer. When he switched to electric guitar he was called “Judas” by his fans at a concert in Manchester in 1966. He continued to challenge his fans by changing styles. Greil Marcus’ review of the 1970 album “Self-Portrait” in Rolling Stone, which began with the words “what is this shit ?”, is legendary. The subsequent change from Jewish to Christianity and a handful of records with religious motifs did not necessarily make things better. After he had only released records with cover versions from the Great American Songbook in recent years, we were eagerly awaiting the 2020 LP with original songs. It was a pleasant surprise and a worthy, timeless work of the 79-year-old.
5 Deep Purple, Whoosh!

More than 50 years after their founding, Deep Purple are not an old men’s band but solid hard rock. Don Airey proves once again that he is a more than worthy successor to Jon Lord on the keyboards. Musically, the 2020 album goes back to the roots and even includes a cover version of one of their few instrumental tracks, which originally appeared on “Shades of Deep Puple” in 1968.

My favourite Angus Young quote stems from 1989 “It bores me to death when people tell me that we’ve made 11 records that sound exactly the same. The fact is that we have made 12 records that sound exactly the same”. There’s nothing to add to that for the 18th record.

Even if Bela B nowadays has the same haircut as Cruella de Ville in 101 Dalmatians and the lyrics no longer attract the attention of the censorship authorities and had been more profound in the past, it’s still fun to listen to the Ärzte in the 2020s.
9 Toten Hosen, Learning English Lesson 3 Mersey Beat

You might as well forget him
The five boys who formed the Toten Hosen in Düsseldorf in 1982 as a local punk rock band have become older gentlemen who fill football stadiums all over the world at their concerts. The lead singer did what older celebrities do: he wrote an autobiography. Apparently a branch of his family tree comes from Liverpool, which is why the new Hosen album consists of cover versions of Mersey Beat hits. So far, so good – but I sorely missed the satire of the language lab announcements on the Learning English 1 and 2 LPs.

Since I have all the Indochine LPs, a “Best of” would have been superfluous for me and I probably bought these two due to a “hunter-gatherer” gene disposition. For all those who don’t know Indochine yet, the 10 LP Box Singles Collection 1980 to 2021 is a good start.

Flauschiger psychedelic Pop-Prog aus Oklahoma. Die Flaming Lips waren nicht immer massentauglich – man erinnere sich an das 1997 erschienene Zaireeka, welches aus 4 CDs bestand, welche parallel auf 4 verschiedenen Players gespielt werden sollten. American Head ist verglichen damit leichte Kost und sprach viele neue Fans an – Für mich persönlich das Album des Jahres!

Hardcore Fans der Smiths sind meist nicht sonderlich begeistert von Morrisseys Solo Alben. Er ist ein eigenwilliger Charakter, dessen Ansichten man nicht immer teilen kann. Dennoch liebe ich seine absurden, bitterbösen und sozialkritischen mit zuckersüsser Stimme vorgetragenen Texte. Das 2020er Album besticht mit eingängigen Melodien mit Ohrwurm Potential.

Diese sind nicht etwas die USA amerikanischen Bluesgrössen sondern britische Bands wie Rolling Stones und Led Zeppelin. Folgerichtig hat er das Album auch in den Abbey Road Studios in London aufgenommen.

Legendär ist die Rezension von Greil Marcus des 1970er Albums «Self-Portrait» im Rolling Stone, welche mit den Worten «what is this shit?» begann. Der anschliessende Wechsel vom Juden- zum Christentum und eine Handvoll Platten mit religiösen Motiven machte die Sache nicht zwingend besser. Nachdem er in den letzten Jahren nur noch Platten mit Cover Versionen aus dem Great American Songbook veröffentlicht hatte, waren wir gespannt auf die 2020er LP mit eigenen Songs. Es war eine freudige Überraschung und ein würdiges, zeitloses Alterswerk des 79 jährigen.

Deep Purple sind auch mehr als 50 Jahre nach ihrer Gründung alles andere als eine Alt-Herrenband sondern solider Hardrock. Don Airey beweist einmal mehr dass er an den Keyboards ein mehr als würdiger Nachfolger von Jon Lord ist. Musikalisch geht das 2020er Album zurück zu den Wurzeln und enthält gar eine Coverversion eines ihrer wenigen Instrumental Stücken, welches ursprünglich auf „Shades of Deep Puple“ im Jahre 1968 erschienen war.

Auch wenn Bela B mittlerweile die gleiche Frisur hat wie Cruella de Ville in den 101 Dalmatinern und die Texte nicht mehr die Zensurbehörden auf den Plan rufen und auch schon tiefsinniger waren, so macht es dennoch auch im 2020 immer noch Spass den Ärzten zuzuhören.

Aus den fünf Jungs, die 1982 die Toten Hosen in Düsseldorf als lokale Punkrockband gründeten, sind ältere Herren geworden, die bei ihren Konzerten Fussballstadien auf der ganzen Welt füllen. Der Leadsänger tat, was ältere Prominente halt so tun: er schrieb eine Autobiografie. Offenbar stammt ein Ast seines Stammbaums aus Liverpool, weshalb das neue Hosen Album aus Coverversionen von Mersey Beat Hits besteht. So weit, so gut – allerdings habe ich die Persiflagen auf die Sprachlabor Ansagen der Learning English 1 und 2 LPs schmerzlich vermisst.

Da ich alle Indochine LP’s habe, wäre für mich eine „Best of“ eigentlich entbehrlich gewesen und ich kaufte diese wohl einer Jäger und Sammler“ Gen-Disposition folgend. Für alle, welche Indochine noch nicht kennen, ist die 10 LP Box Singles Collection 1980 bis 2021 in jedem Fall ein guter Einstig.
